This May Private Leisure Charity Program came back to the previous site in Jatiluwih Village. This time we targeted other group of elderly as well as organized drawing competition for kids in this Banjar Kesambi. We took long drive from Denpasar to reach the village that administratively belongs to Tabanan Regency. We arrived at Bale Banjar – Local Small Hall – where the kids and elderly gathered and soon begun.

First we initialed the drawing competition. They actually had drawn back at home before we came thus we only gathered what they had already poured on paper. Basically it’s all about their dream in the future, what they want to be. We collected all their drawings and choose which one the best whilst discarded those identicals. However, the selection to decided the champion not only stop at what we deemed the best on paper, the kids take turn to talk before us why they choose to become the very image they draw. Some kids gave impressive answers but only three designed to win.

The third place won by Andhy for his dream to become a doctor then the second place for Febby who wants to be a cook and is usually help her mother at kitchen, small steps to get her dream. And then the first place went to Wahyu, a kid who proudly say that he want to become the part of Bleganjur, a traditional music band also using traditional music instruments run and has long become the part of Balinese life. The three of them, aside from received school package but were also had pocket money for their victory.

Seventeen kids joined this event, all of them, not only the winners respectively given the school package. The kids, still in their elementary school, received within the package a bag, stationary, snacks, vitamin and milk. After took some pictures with the kids, we move to others charity delivery for the elderly. Four of them were given basic food package and we divided ourselves in small group to help those elderly brought the package into their home. From the six intended for this charity, four given the basic package and one elder woman preferred to have vitamins, milk and medicines since she acclaimed still be able to fulfill her basic necessity. One last family was Wayan Arnawa family. This was the family we visited on our first and previous charity program in Jatiluwih. They already had a quiet decent home to live but still no electricity and thus cause the children hard to study at night. We gave them emergency light.

That’s all our activities in this village and for those who want to give something or lends some hands for these people, the kids will need scholarship to continue their education, or even for particular kids to have access into their specific dream such as Balinese culture preservation.

Private Leisure March Charity targeted families in Denpasar, the capital city of Bali. The main priority will be two kids; one was disable boy and a girl with cancer. The first visited was the disable boy named Kadek Isa Gunawan. He is a twelve year old boy with no parents. His father was died and his mother couldn’t able to raise him give the parental right to his aunt Wayan Reken. They live together in her house at Tangkuban Perhau, Banjar Balun – Padang Sambian Denpasar. Wayan Reken in her daily routine is a scavenger. This is the only profession she can do to support the family’s poor economic condition.

Kadek Isa Gunawan paralyzed from the waist down. He couldn’t do anything aside from lying on bed. Even to toilet and doing daily chores he needs his aunt and older brother help. He is twelve years old now but couldn’t continue his study due to the health and economic circumstance. He became paralyzed when hit by a very high fever, his aunt signify it as polio. Kadek Isa has been search for health medication, as far as their economic condition allowed, but with futile result. We gave this family basic food supply and some pocket money.

The next one is a strong girl named Made Kardiantari, another twelve years old with blood cancer. We visit her in Sanglah Hospital since her condition broke down suddenly the night before. It has been a year Kardiantari walk in and out the hospital to stabilize her health. Daughter of Bapak Komang Rai and Ibu Kari only depends on the government support for any medical care needed. They both couldn’t work since the need to constantly watch over their daughter condition is unavoidable. We gave this family some pocket money.

What they needed the most should have cash to support the family economic and especially the two kids’ medical treatment. However, if it is possible for you who want to lend some hands, Kadek Isa Gunawan might be able to have use of wheelchair.

Continuing our program once done in Klungkung, we came back into this place, Dawan Kaler Village to visit other families in need. There were five targets, four of them stays in Dawan Kaler and one target lives separately in different village but according to the local population record still belongs to Dawan Kaler Village. Accompanied with village official Pak Sumiartha, Bu Gusti and Pak Agung we began this February, month of love journey.

Wayan Sudana was the first old man living in a hut visited by our team. His hut barely stands and during rainy season there were lots of dangerous mosquitoes lurking around. He lives with his mentally instable son, only two of them. He usually collected raw material for plaited rattan. He’d get around IDR 70,000 per week once he had enough of them. Aside from foods and medicines, we gave a single bed with pillow to Pak Wayan Sudana.

Another short drive and short stroll we arrived at Wayan Wartana house. Lives only with his son his only source for life would be through collecting firewood to be exchanged with rice. We gave basic necessity foods to this old man. Next will be the three elderly siblings Simen, Simin and Rimen also do the same job of collecting fire woods. They had with them two single beds and pillow along the same package of foods and medicines.

The last one in this village was Made Kerta. 70 years old man suffering with stroke makes him disable to do things, another basic foods and medicines for this man. The last target, the man who fallen from a high coconut tree and thus broke his bones left him disable. It was quiet a journey to reach this man house up on hill. We went through dangerous mossy stairs, climb up above. Out of breath and deadly tired we reached this man house give him our donation of foods, medicines and cash.

All five targets received a little cash from us. Meanwhile, most of foods given contained the basic needed the most such as rice, eggs, cooking oil, instant noodles, coffee and sugar. There were also some medicines when they get fever or suffered stiff muscles. Those with bed and pillow were also given with small blanket. Some clean secondhand clothes were also given to them. You can help these people with donating clothes, blankets, foods, medicines or even cash.

December 8th was the long journey to the east where we visit six poor families in our monthly social program for the poor. This December we came to Antiga village in Karangasem and would aid six targets from lonely old man in his hut, old grannies to a mute man. We were welcome by head of Antiga village Pak Made Badri with his six head Banjars at their office. This was one target-one banjar.

The first one, we made a visit to was Pak Nyoman Redit in Banjar Kelod accompanied by head Banjar pak Madra. Redit is a man not fully sane lived only with his sister in law. Both of them are two old people, the sister in-law dutifully take care of her brother. The second one was poor family in Banjar Seraya. We were accompanied there by head Banjar Pak Nira. This is a family of parents and three children. Pak Wayan Bagia two oldest daughters are in school with the last child is still a little boy. The eldest daughter might not be able to continue her education due to lack of money.

The third target was old woman lives along on hill so we went up and climb to exhaustion. Accompanied by head Banjar Pak Darsana, he told us that this granny or Ni Cendol, never comes down from hill, work with selling cashew. Living alone in a hut not fit for any old woman showed what poverty not would even kind for an elderly. Following that week December adventure, we were picked up by head of Banjar Labuhan at foothill to visit the next target, Pak Gederan. He is a fisherman lives in a hut definitely improper to live under. Moving further was another old woman also lives alone however her only daughter and grandchildren still take care good of her. In her mostly lonely life, this Ni Dangin Tjenik usually has health problem due to her age. The last man in this charity was Pak Kolok, a mute man do odd labor job and lives up on hill. With only a hut and sometimes has no food to eat, this man still eager to work, usually sewing Kapok or vegetable silk mattress.

For each family we deliver them cash medicines and basic necessity foods. We were also gave them mattress and pillow except for family of Pak Wayan Bagia. We gave the package of stationery, bag and clothes instead. There was warm jacket also for Ni Cendol to give more protection for her old and fragile body. If you are willing to help any of this family, they would need it in cash, household project least a simple one where they would have proper home to shield from the biting night cold wind. Education insurance for the two girls or even cattle for Pak Kolok and Gederan who are strong and still eager to work just to be able to eat every day.

November charity from Private Leisure International this time targeted poor families in Tabanan, precisely in Banjar Kesambi, Jatiluwih Village. The target of this charity was nine poor families with the team visited two houses from those nine targets. A long road trip, for around 2 hours drive to finally arrive at destined location. Those nine were gathered in one Bale Banjar or a hall where local usually have their meeting and public gathering. It is a very nice location with exotic tropical view and cool temperature; it is the best Banjar location throughout the charity program we held. We were welcomed and nicely assisted by head Banjar Pak Wayan Agus Utama.

Those nine people in this charity respectively were I Nengah Semadi, I Ketut Winarta, I Ketut Suparka, I Wayan Semendra, I Gede Ariaka, I Wayan Arnawa, I Nengah Kardiasa, I Wayan Sukamerta and then Ni Ketut Wita. Each of them was given basic necessity foods such as rice, cooking oil, sugar, eggs and many more. They also had blanket and toiletries as well as pocket money. From nine people gathere in Bale Banjar, some elderly or woman with child was helped with their charity package until home. Two of them are visited by whole group at their house.

The first one was house of Ketut Wita, an elderly woman who lives alone in her house. After a little chit chat, we move to the last destination, which was Pak Wayan Arnawa house. Quite a long journey passing through green lustful rice paddies and tropical forest, we were exhausted yet happy. Pak Arnawa conditioned in the area can be considered as the worst. Lives under tent which house consists of one kitchen and one unfinished building, purposely where they sleep but due to the lack of fund, the construction stopped halfway. Pak Arnawa family are family of five, pak Arnawa himself with his wife and mother then his two kids. Only Pak Arnawa’s mother sleep alone in the kitchen.

The kids still in their kindergarten where they need 3 kilometers walk to reach their school. At home when night comes, they should bear the darkness since no electricity reached their house. This family also has no bathroom make them should go downhill a little to reach the closest river. This family would need every form of help you can offer, starting from house, foods, clothes, cash, education finance and many more.

Two families are the target of September Charity this time. They are family of Pak Miasa and Pak Dana. They live in two difference locations, one in Batu Bulan-Sukawati and the other in Denpasar. It made us went to the farthest first, which was Pak Miasa house. This poor family consists of Pak Miasa himself, his wife Wayan Sutini with only daughter who is on her high school and living with relative.

What would we expected other than a bad living condition for a family which economic mainly supported by a woman figure. Wayan Sutini is a mother, a wife and the one who goes to work every single day to earn something to eat every day. She left with no choice other than work harder when his husband one day suddenly handicapped. Stroke hit Pak Miasa makes him could not move his lower part body freely. He need help of stick to walk and could not stand too long. Their daughter need to live with relative in order to cut tuition fee which mostly aided by his banjar – traditional government institution in village level –

Wayan Sutini needs to earn something everyday just for them to eat. Usually she works as a labor in every construction project needed her. From here will she earn IDR 50,000 per day however, when there is no project she will selling traditional cake in the market from 08.00 AM to 10.00 PM. It could not give money as much as doing labor job, only around IDR 10,000 per day.

Economic condition of this family that can be said getting worse when Pak Miasa hit by stroke, from two to only one woman supporting all. At some point it almost forced their daughter to drop her school yet the Banjar takes pity with their family and finally decided to support the school fee. In fact, Pak Miasa family has two other members, his mother with mental illness and his old uncle who never come home unless he reached absolute tiredness when walking aimlessly all day. This poverty slowly drives them crazy.

The second target is family of Pak Dana with wife and their three sickly children. They live behind the glamour of capital city in Bali, Denpasar. Under their small hut on land belong to Bali government. They originally from Karangasem, the eastern area in Bali and try their fortune in the island main city. Father who is a labor and mother who solely taking care of their sick children while keeping cattle, that belongs to someone else, which will be sold and the profits share between two.

The tree children, two are female and the smallest one is a 5 year old boy. Wayan Widiana and Kadek Juniarsih are two the worst where these two 16 and 12 years old have a hard time just to walk. They can talk but not in a normal way, the words coming from their mouth sounds sluggish and slurred. The little boy can walk if there is something to hold or using stick. Starting from pregnancy to their birth onto the world was normal. Not until they reached 3 months old. Their abnormality was starting from this age, the same for all children. All medical effort has been done for their children health but it’s futile.

Each family was given basic necessity foods, clothes and pocket money on this charity. Regular visit, probably 3 months ahead will be done to see the progress of both families and for seeing what’s more we can do for these families. They will need every assistances from you, especially cash and medical treatment.

Delivering the aids for those families, we had to walk kilometers away into the depth of village, going uphill then downhill, passed through dried-out river, walking under tens of coconut trees just to reach them and witnessing with our own eyes their life in poverty. Our journey into the wild, don’t expect wild animals except for local dogs, pigs and cows, were accompanied by two villages officials.

First we met with Ketut Sutri. An old man with not a good sight and hearing cost by his age, is still doing a very dangerous job of climbing coconut trees. Extracting the coconut fruit for then produced it into palm wine is the only way he can feed his family. He lives with his son whose doing odd job to take care of his wife as they had been blessed with two children. They all lived in a two-chamber shack. It is in a very badly shape hut, definitely not an environment good for people to live under. After delivering the aids to Ketut Sutri, we then met the second family of this charity project. The second target was an old woman named Wayan Siria. She lives with her daughter and son-in law. Wayan Siria is a blind granny and a little bit deaf. When we spoke with her, we need to increase our voice a bit louder for Siria to hear what we said. This fragile old woman also sleeps under her little shack.

The third family was married couple having an only son who lives in other regency. Sleep under a shack consists of bedroom and kitchen, which could not shelter them fully from the rain. Meanwhile, Ni Wayan Warti another target of this charity is living her life alone; with the only child she has lives very far from home. Close to where Warti lives are the two sisters, Nengah Warte and Nengah Landra. They are both sick old women and in need of profound health care. The sisters’ condition was not very different with Bapak Nyampuh. With his swelling legs, he almost could not do anything. In order to get food or anything he needs, this old man makes plaited bamboo and bartering it with any seller passed through his house.

Most poor families in Dawan would need their huts to rebuild into a decent house, healthy and firm enough for people to live. They would also need profound medical care, since most of them are elderly with bad health condition. Periodically there will be doctor from Public-Health Center coming into the village and gives free check up as well as medicine but it has yet gives them significant development for their health condition. Some also would appreciate used clothes, still good to wear by an elderly, infant or for a little girl of 5 years old. They also still need basic necessity food or cash.

This would not our last time to visit people in Dawan. Continuous charity hope can be done in this area intended to provide better living for people here.

Welcoming the second month of this year, we have our charity in a traditional village of Gianyar Regency, Bali. Our targets of this month were abandoned elders who live in Bukian Village, Payangan, Gianyar. We departed at 10.00 AM from our office in Denpasar as the trip costs about two hours drive. We were arrived at 12 PM and we stopped at Perbekel Office of Bukian village to meet the poor elders there, the target of our charity. Before our team planned to visit this village, some of Private Leisure staff had surveyed the location and those elderly, which resulted to 19 targets of poor elders in this village. Bukian village itself consists of 11 banjar, a traditional system of Balinese residential. These banjar have recorded as the place for 1,600 families or 6,500 persons with many elders.

There are 164 poor families on list under government’s care but there are much more poor families have yet receive government’s care and assistance. Most of people in this village are farmers though tourism sector has flourishing the closest area of this village. Head Village, Mr Made Junarta explained the condition of this village for us while explaining our charity program to the villagers by fluent Balinese language to the elders who were mostly only spoken this local tounge. He also explained if this village has not yet reached by the prosperity of tourism sector though Bukian village is placed nearby the famous village of Ubud. There is a tendency to growing home industry amongst local people as the form of tourism support but there is no direct access to the glamour life of tourism sector.

Previous survey held on 4 February 2012 when two of us visited 19 poor elders and poor families in this village. They were living in pitiful condition while most of them were elders who made a living for their own life despite their poverty. Most of the elders are lives with relative but just given a few meters of land where they could built a hut as their sleeping chamber. Some of the elders were making canangsari (a kind of traditional offerings for daily rituals of Hindu people) but most of them only depending on the pity of neighbors and their family. Every month they are getting food’s aid from the village officers who distributes 15 kg of rice worth Rp24,000. They were usually ate vegetables which growth around their homes such as cassava leaves.

After our representatives delivering our program, we dropped some aids for the poor families. The 19 families were getting a package of rice, cooking oil, eggs, noodle, soap and medicine. We were also slipping pocket money for each of them. The total of 19 poor families was tempting us to visit two poor elders. They are Desak Made Kolot and Ni Made Gelis. The journey of visiting first family was passing the lush of green rice fields with a long walking track. It sends us to a hut of Ni Made Gelis first where she lives with her youngest daughter. The hut built by bamboo and some bricks. The bamboo walls closed the three sides of this hut while one side of the hut opens to the outdoor breeze. Leakage has hit the roof while current hard rain wetting the bed of Ni Gelis which is only a carpet on a bamboo couch. She has entering his 85th ages with a daughter who is the youngest and didn’t married. We gave her a package of foods, a bed, pillows, blanket and some household amenities for this family.

Our second visit is sending us to the home of Desak Made Kolot. Passing difficult yet beautiful track of paddy field, the bamboo hut of Desak Made Kolot built on her brother’s land. She lives indepedently, without no one accompanying her. Everyday Ni Kolot is making a living by creating canangsari or other Hindu ceremony’s equipment for other villagers. She is sleeping on a bamboo plait carpet without any family to care, all alone in her 75 years old. She has some daughters but now all of them had married. Sometimes her grandchildren visiting her. We brought same package for her and inviting Ni Kolot also some Perbekel officers who guided us there to take a lunch with us. After this visit, we headed back to our office in Denpasar with higher awareness and understanding if there are much people who need our help. Our aid might be nothing for several people but for ones who struggle to live, it can be everything.

This January, the first month in 2012 we have our charity in the capital city of Karangasem, Amlapura. Our target of this month charity were two poor families, where one was family with malnutrition child and another one is married couple with seven kids. We departed at 10.00 am in the morning and it cost us almost 3 hours drive to reach our first destination. It was quite a pleasant journey where we passed around the beauty of East Bali along the road. There were green everywhere, the forest and the hill. Much to our delight is the stunning beach along the road. We passed through areas in which the touch and vestige of tourism in Bali is still in its low point and it’s somehow refreshing.

Sang Wayan Putu family live in a house where we had to walk in the midst of green lustful rice field. The environment was very alluring but the condition of this family was not. They lived on a land belong to Sang Wayan supervisor, where he and his family allowed to stay there as long as they take care of the cattle. They live in a hut. One simple building acts as their bedroom and across it, the kitchen followed by one traditional bale. Sang Wayan Putu married to Sang Ayu and was bless with three children, however the second child is malnutrition. The child at first not even able to walked, now after given periodic milk from the local government, at least their son could step his feet, though it kind of wooble. The oldest of their children, Sang Putu is in her elementary school while the smallest of them is little boy with a cute yet sour look adorn his face.

We have our lunch together with this family trailed with the delivery of our donation consists of necessity foods, mattress, bag and stationery for Sang Putu, milk for Sang Kadek and some pocket money. We also gave the children a small package for each. It might be not a huge donation, yet we hope that this charity in some ways will be able to give little support for this family. The family that after the husband fell and broke his bones, made him unable to support the family for almost three consecutive months. The mother had replaces her husband position to support the family after the accident happened, such struggling for IDR 10,000 income per day.

The second family situated not too far from the first site since we spent not more than 5 minutes drive to reach Nyoman Sudarsana house. This is a family with seven children. They live in a house that is not appropriate for living. Seven children pile in one house, where all goods from scavenged at one corner, bed in one side, chamber for their bedroom, collapsed zinc roof, it’s a total chaos. The father is what we called it “kernet” here in Bali, they are people who help public transport driver to find passenger for some amount of money. The mother is a laborer but more often is a scavenger. To support her education, the eldest daughter work at a fruit stall after coming to school up to 09.00 pm at night. For this family we gave basic and necessity foods as well as stationery and little package for each child.

Journey home, if passing by stunning beach and ever after green was not a boring trip, this was a lovely charity to begin with. Let’s us share more and more for those who needed, even if what we give is a small thing, for those who awaits, our help worth more than anything.

On December 22, the sky was clear to have a special even such as our Bali charity program. Our target of the month was the family of Bapak I Wayan Tinggal. He lives in Gianyar Regency, precisely at Batukaru Street-Selat, Samplangan Village. We left the office at 01.30 p.m. in accor with our schedule and arrived there around 03.00 pm. Pak Tinggal lives in a hut with a very poor condition, did not suit for human to live in. He lives there with his mentally disorder wife and mentally retarded children. There are only two children but both cannot be relied on looking for a job to support the family’s economic condition due to their mental state.

Pak Tinggal actually had six children but only two staying with him and his wife in that hut. He was a formerly homesteader in Sulawesi, following the government recommend for her islands having even population through transmigration. Some succeed and some failed, Pak Tinggal is among them who failed and in the end going back to his homeland, Bali. In Sulawesi, he lost two children in forest and where his wife and one of his children also lost then found alive but having mental disorder. He actually had four children still alive however, one of his children never visit him, never looking back at his own family. Another one occasionally coming home if he has worked to do to support the family’s economic condition. Then the remaining two are those of mentally retarded children, a fully grown man and woman.

On December 22, through a rather steep path we saw clearly the hut where Pak Tinggal and his family lived. The rather steep path where one wrong move we will going down to the ravine below while carrying our donation one by one. To this family we donate some necessity stuff that we thought could ease the burden of this family. With us, we brought two mattress, pillows, blankets, and necessity food such as rice, eggs, cooking oil, sugar, coffee powder and more. We also gave them toiletries as in soaps, toothbrushes, toothpastes and shampoos. In the packet, there were also clothes and detergents for them to wash as well as some cooking equipments. We also gave this family some pocket money.

The hut is really in a tragic and poor condition. It built with anything strong enough to make it stand, always flooding on rainy season and anytime could suffer landslide. Here we met his paralyzed and mentally disorder wife and his two mentally retarded children. We saw hanging garment where they usually take a bath, we saw the chamber where they stick together and sleep every night and their kitchen. Here we had our chat with Pak Tinggal, where he shared his experience and lives in Sulawesi and in Bali.

It has been four years he and family live in that hut, on the land belong to someone else where at anytime they could be driven away. Once, there was social service officer visited Pak Tinggal and would like to put him and his wife at the nursing home and his children at an orphanage but his son strong headedly did not want them to be separated, make it become a very hard decision for Pak Tinggal to accept the offer. We have a really long chat with Pak Tinggal, not only heard his experience and burden of life, but also his hope and how we can help him further with his condition today. Yet, we still hope that Pak Tinggal will accept the government offer so the future would not become too horrible for him and his family. It is since his old age and gradually he would not be able to support the family anymore, what with his profession as a scavenger.

Anyone out there who read this story and willing to help, anything you give, anything you want to provide, everything will be very much appreciated. This old man, who can be said support his poor family alone is in need of our gracious help. He hoped for a safe place for his family to live together under one roof. They hoped they would not be separated into an orphanage and to a nursing home, as suggested by the Social Service. They wish for a simple house where they could stick with each other and having no fear to be driven away every single day.

Our visit on this month charity was not not to Pak Tinggal family only, but also visiting once again Semara Putra Orphanage in Klungkung. We gave the children a large television for their entertainment. At the orphanage, we did not meet with Ibu Gunasih, the foster mother at Semara but a representative there to accept our donation. There were also almost no children to be found since all of them accompanied Ibu Gunasih in a Tokoh Magazine event in Denpasar. After this orphanage, we headed back to our office in Denpasar, with more comprehension and understanding that there are people who have worse suffering and that despite their condition they still fighting and struggle to live.
