Welcoming the second month of this year, we have our charity in a traditional village of Gianyar Regency, Bali. Our targets of this month were abandoned elders who live in Bukian Village, Payangan, Gianyar. We departed at 10.00 AM from our office in Denpasar as the trip costs about two hours drive. We were arrived at 12 PM and we stopped at Perbekel Office of Bukian village to meet the poor elders there, the target of our charity. Before our team planned to visit this village, some of Private Leisure staff had surveyed the location and those elderly, which resulted to 19 targets of poor elders in this village. Bukian village itself consists of 11 banjar, a traditional system of Balinese residential. These banjar have recorded as the place for 1,600 families or 6,500 persons with many elders.

There are 164 poor families on list under government’s care but there are much more poor families have yet receive government’s care and assistance. Most of people in this village are farmers though tourism sector has flourishing the closest area of this village. Head Village, Mr Made Junarta explained the condition of this village for us while explaining our charity program to the villagers by fluent Balinese language to the elders who were mostly only spoken this local tounge. He also explained if this village has not yet reached by the prosperity of tourism sector though Bukian village is placed nearby the famous village of Ubud. There is a tendency to growing home industry amongst local people as the form of tourism support but there is no direct access to the glamour life of tourism sector.

Previous survey held on 4 February 2012 when two of us visited 19 poor elders and poor families in this village. They were living in pitiful condition while most of them were elders who made a living for their own life despite their poverty. Most of the elders are lives with relative but just given a few meters of land where they could built a hut as their sleeping chamber. Some of the elders were making canangsari (a kind of traditional offerings for daily rituals of Hindu people) but most of them only depending on the pity of neighbors and their family. Every month they are getting food’s aid from the village officers who distributes 15 kg of rice worth Rp24,000. They were usually ate vegetables which growth around their homes such as cassava leaves.

After our representatives delivering our program, we dropped some aids for the poor families. The 19 families were getting a package of rice, cooking oil, eggs, noodle, soap and medicine. We were also slipping pocket money for each of them. The total of 19 poor families was tempting us to visit two poor elders. They are Desak Made Kolot and Ni Made Gelis. The journey of visiting first family was passing the lush of green rice fields with a long walking track. It sends us to a hut of Ni Made Gelis first where she lives with her youngest daughter. The hut built by bamboo and some bricks. The bamboo walls closed the three sides of this hut while one side of the hut opens to the outdoor breeze. Leakage has hit the roof while current hard rain wetting the bed of Ni Gelis which is only a carpet on a bamboo couch. She has entering his 85th ages with a daughter who is the youngest and didn’t married. We gave her a package of foods, a bed, pillows, blanket and some household amenities for this family.

Our second visit is sending us to the home of Desak Made Kolot. Passing difficult yet beautiful track of paddy field, the bamboo hut of Desak Made Kolot built on her brother’s land. She lives indepedently, without no one accompanying her. Everyday Ni Kolot is making a living by creating canangsari or other Hindu ceremony’s equipment for other villagers. She is sleeping on a bamboo plait carpet without any family to care, all alone in her 75 years old. She has some daughters but now all of them had married. Sometimes her grandchildren visiting her. We brought same package for her and inviting Ni Kolot also some Perbekel officers who guided us there to take a lunch with us. After this visit, we headed back to our office in Denpasar with higher awareness and understanding if there are much people who need our help. Our aid might be nothing for several people but for ones who struggle to live, it can be everything.

This January, the first month in 2012 we have our charity in the capital city of Karangasem, Amlapura. Our target of this month charity were two poor families, where one was family with malnutrition child and another one is married couple with seven kids. We departed at 10.00 am in the morning and it cost us almost 3 hours drive to reach our first destination. It was quite a pleasant journey where we passed around the beauty of East Bali along the road. There were green everywhere, the forest and the hill. Much to our delight is the stunning beach along the road. We passed through areas in which the touch and vestige of tourism in Bali is still in its low point and it’s somehow refreshing.

Sang Wayan Putu family live in a house where we had to walk in the midst of green lustful rice field. The environment was very alluring but the condition of this family was not. They lived on a land belong to Sang Wayan supervisor, where he and his family allowed to stay there as long as they take care of the cattle. They live in a hut. One simple building acts as their bedroom and across it, the kitchen followed by one traditional bale. Sang Wayan Putu married to Sang Ayu and was bless with three children, however the second child is malnutrition. The child at first not even able to walked, now after given periodic milk from the local government, at least their son could step his feet, though it kind of wooble. The oldest of their children, Sang Putu is in her elementary school while the smallest of them is little boy with a cute yet sour look adorn his face.

We have our lunch together with this family trailed with the delivery of our donation consists of necessity foods, mattress, bag and stationery for Sang Putu, milk for Sang Kadek and some pocket money. We also gave the children a small package for each. It might be not a huge donation, yet we hope that this charity in some ways will be able to give little support for this family. The family that after the husband fell and broke his bones, made him unable to support the family for almost three consecutive months. The mother had replaces her husband position to support the family after the accident happened, such struggling for IDR 10,000 income per day.

The second family situated not too far from the first site since we spent not more than 5 minutes drive to reach Nyoman Sudarsana house. This is a family with seven children. They live in a house that is not appropriate for living. Seven children pile in one house, where all goods from scavenged at one corner, bed in one side, chamber for their bedroom, collapsed zinc roof, it’s a total chaos. The father is what we called it “kernet” here in Bali, they are people who help public transport driver to find passenger for some amount of money. The mother is a laborer but more often is a scavenger. To support her education, the eldest daughter work at a fruit stall after coming to school up to 09.00 pm at night. For this family we gave basic and necessity foods as well as stationery and little package for each child.

Journey home, if passing by stunning beach and ever after green was not a boring trip, this was a lovely charity to begin with. Let’s us share more and more for those who needed, even if what we give is a small thing, for those who awaits, our help worth more than anything.

On December 22, the sky was clear to have a special even such as our Bali charity program. Our target of the month was the family of Bapak I Wayan Tinggal. He lives in Gianyar Regency, precisely at Batukaru Street-Selat, Samplangan Village. We left the office at 01.30 p.m. in accor with our schedule and arrived there around 03.00 pm. Pak Tinggal lives in a hut with a very poor condition, did not suit for human to live in. He lives there with his mentally disorder wife and mentally retarded children. There are only two children but both cannot be relied on looking for a job to support the family’s economic condition due to their mental state.

Pak Tinggal actually had six children but only two staying with him and his wife in that hut. He was a formerly homesteader in Sulawesi, following the government recommend for her islands having even population through transmigration. Some succeed and some failed, Pak Tinggal is among them who failed and in the end going back to his homeland, Bali. In Sulawesi, he lost two children in forest and where his wife and one of his children also lost then found alive but having mental disorder. He actually had four children still alive however, one of his children never visit him, never looking back at his own family. Another one occasionally coming home if he has worked to do to support the family’s economic condition. Then the remaining two are those of mentally retarded children, a fully grown man and woman.

On December 22, through a rather steep path we saw clearly the hut where Pak Tinggal and his family lived. The rather steep path where one wrong move we will going down to the ravine below while carrying our donation one by one. To this family we donate some necessity stuff that we thought could ease the burden of this family. With us, we brought two mattress, pillows, blankets, and necessity food such as rice, eggs, cooking oil, sugar, coffee powder and more. We also gave them toiletries as in soaps, toothbrushes, toothpastes and shampoos. In the packet, there were also clothes and detergents for them to wash as well as some cooking equipments. We also gave this family some pocket money.

The hut is really in a tragic and poor condition. It built with anything strong enough to make it stand, always flooding on rainy season and anytime could suffer landslide. Here we met his paralyzed and mentally disorder wife and his two mentally retarded children. We saw hanging garment where they usually take a bath, we saw the chamber where they stick together and sleep every night and their kitchen. Here we had our chat with Pak Tinggal, where he shared his experience and lives in Sulawesi and in Bali.

It has been four years he and family live in that hut, on the land belong to someone else where at anytime they could be driven away. Once, there was social service officer visited Pak Tinggal and would like to put him and his wife at the nursing home and his children at an orphanage but his son strong headedly did not want them to be separated, make it become a very hard decision for Pak Tinggal to accept the offer. We have a really long chat with Pak Tinggal, not only heard his experience and burden of life, but also his hope and how we can help him further with his condition today. Yet, we still hope that Pak Tinggal will accept the government offer so the future would not become too horrible for him and his family. It is since his old age and gradually he would not be able to support the family anymore, what with his profession as a scavenger.

Anyone out there who read this story and willing to help, anything you give, anything you want to provide, everything will be very much appreciated. This old man, who can be said support his poor family alone is in need of our gracious help. He hoped for a safe place for his family to live together under one roof. They hoped they would not be separated into an orphanage and to a nursing home, as suggested by the Social Service. They wish for a simple house where they could stick with each other and having no fear to be driven away every single day.

Our visit on this month charity was not not to Pak Tinggal family only, but also visiting once again Semara Putra Orphanage in Klungkung. We gave the children a large television for their entertainment. At the orphanage, we did not meet with Ibu Gunasih, the foster mother at Semara but a representative there to accept our donation. There were also almost no children to be found since all of them accompanied Ibu Gunasih in a Tokoh Magazine event in Denpasar. After this orphanage, we headed back to our office in Denpasar, with more comprehension and understanding that there are people who have worse suffering and that despite their condition they still fighting and struggle to live.

On October 25th, all team in Private Leisure International departed from our office at Pura Banyu Kuning Street and headed directly to Lebih Village in Gianyar. The village is the spotlight for our charity project this month. Our target is four poor families, families that in their everyday life live just for struggling. Work hard so that tomorrow and the next days ahead they or their children can eat.

The first family was the family of Ibu Siti Aminah and Bapak Haryanto from Banyuwangi. They live in a hut with two rooms, one as their bedroom area and another one as their requirements chamber. The tiny space in their bedroom area is able to accommodate one bed only with no mattress. The next-door room is where they put all their belonging, whether it foods, clothes, anything.

This married couple had two children but only their youngest live with them. Their first-born child lives with their grandmother in their hometown. Their youngest now sit in his first year at local elementary school.

The second family was the family of Bapak Gusti Lanang Santra. He and his wife were bestowed with two little boys. The older brother named Agus and the second one is Dek Nik. They live not too far away from Bapak Haryanto. Bapak Gusti is a farm worker who takes care of his boss rice field and at the same time also raising his boss cows.

Both families received mattress, staple food, and some children toys. There had been several visits to this village asking about what they need or what the children wish to have, that is why Agus got his pair of new shoes.

Those two families just hope for a better life ahead while keep trying hard in these present days. Pak Gusti Lanang also wishes their children could have a proper education. He said that he is able to manage more hard to fulfill their household necessities though it will take differently with their children education. He hoped that his children would be able to have a proper education.

The next family is quite far from these two families so we drive our car once again and meeting the family of Bapak Widarta and Ibu Made Mewastini. They both have three little children. The older daughter is now in her fourth year in elementary school. The other two are a four years old daughter and a 2 years old baby boy. The father of this family is also a labor.

Together with his wife, they are also raising ducks. They have a house but it not theirs, it lend to them.

None of those families we visited owned the land or the hut they lived on, all lent. The same for the last family we visited. It was family of Bapak Wayan Cenik with his wife and his two daughters. When first visited them, this was the family with no electricity but when we went on October 25th, there is a nice neighbor willing to share their electricity access. What make us sad looking this family is that one of the room where the father or sometime his sister in law sleep are side by side with duck coop.

To the last two families, instead of giving them mattress we replace it with dish rack while the remaining are the same staple foods and children toys. We give them so little and they greet us with so much happiness radiating from their faces.

After visiting all those families, we headed back to Denpasar. All this experience nothing but give many to think and to understand about. That we are in a far more better situation with them, that no matter how small it is, our help our and our genuine intend to help others can bring smile, laugh or even tears of happiness. And we who give something for others also at the same time left us with a warm feeling in our heart, an irreplaceable one.

April 30th – May 1st, Private Leisure International is celebrating its 3rd anniversary. In this special event, the company wants to give a special gift for the staff that support the company and make it stand as the way it is today. Memorable trip to Gili is the answer. Let go all the works behind and let yourself free in Gili. The 2 days 1 night trip to Gili Island, we have the best of our time there. We have our tiring but fun bicycle time, go around the island visiting many villas we put in our website. We also have a high-spirited games session at the beach. At first the game sound so silly but it turned out that the games actually difficult to do and quite reasonable. Laugh and cheers rang from us throughout the games. We really have our memorable anniversary In Gili.

The happiness will become more genuine when we can share it with others, especially those who are in economically cannot afford such a thing. That’s why on our return trip, we bought basic foods like rice, cooking oil and sugar. There is also stationery and toy for children in that village. Once again, as our promise, we visit Nawakerti Village. It is indeed our previous project has been ended there but we will always remember this village and every time our path crossed, we will take our time in this village again. It was on our anniversary that we decided to share our happiness with them.

We asked Pak Sujana, the elderly there, to help us leads our way to some families and deliver the stuff we bought. We visit quite lot of families there. The first one is I Nengah Gedug from Banjar Bau Kawan then followed by couples with two children, Nyoman Daging from Banjar Bau Kaler. They have small children of four and three years old thus, aside from give them the basic foods aid we also give toys for their children.

Made Kamar is the third family we visit. He has such large family with six children. We meet her daughter named Ni Luh Picek who is on his fourth year in Elementary School we also meet his father, Nengah Bait. The next family is belong to Wayan Tokal and followed by family of Wayan Poglo, although we cannot say this kind of thing to pak Poglo since he lives alone in his house. With no wife and his children work in the city, he has no one to take care of him.

Aside from giving them package contains basic foods need and soap, toys and stationery for the children, each family also been give some amount of money. It’s not a big number of money but we believe it can help them in some ways, for people who struggle each single day so they can eat every day. Just saw their smile and sincere gratitude is everything we need as it brought warmth into our heart. Hope in the future we can help more people and even we bid our goodbye to Nawakerti, as always, every time our path cross, we will visit this village and will never forget about them.

On our way home from Nawakerti, there are some package remain, we give them to any people on the road and for the toys, to the many children who take toys from us merrily. We are satisfied and happy that in some ways, we can give something to other and giving is the best way to express happiness. It is Private Leisure International’s holiday and help.

Cow project in Nawakerti Village was over. We did not have any routine schedule to that village again. However, once in a while we might visit the village again.

The next project takes place in Bangli Regency, precisely at Pengotan Village.

This time, Bali Charity visited the village together with Pak Kadek and Ibu Down from Bali Caring Community. Not like our latest visit to Nawakerti that cost us 2 hours drive, it only takes 1 hour to reach Pengotan Village.

We received information that Pengotan village has quite high position in term of total amount poor households in Bangli regency. From The data showed that from 966 houses, 517 of them are poor. It almost 60% of them even there is some cases of severe malnutrition.

People in Pengotan Village generally work as farmer and breeding over the cow or pig. Most of the people there also depends their life from weaving bamboo. They are very productive as it can be seen from tumpang sari – intercropping – system they applied, really a great example.

Accompanied by the head village, Bapak Wayan Arsana, we visited 5 families around Padpadan Village. Again, not like at Nawakerti village where local houses very difficult to get in touch with, at this village our local target situated not so far from the main road. It needs few steps only from the place we parked our car.

The first we visit is Ibu Kramen, a widow with four children. Three of them have been married as one lived in one house environment with the mother. This old woman usually cultivates over 20-acre land belong to other people. It takes us serious concern of that old woman still has to work seriously for a living.

The next family we visit is I Wayan Molos family. They are 70 years old couple and live with one of their son, Wayan Madu. They are farmer and breeding cow. Wayan Madu himself is doing varied job according to order, sometimes he become laborer, sometimes farmer or even any other works people need. They live in a hut build on land of other.

We then visit Nengah Riwin and Wayan Tomi families. Both houses coincidentally stand across each other. Each family has two children their daily profession is a farmer that cultivating over others land.

In our way home from Padpadan village and as we looking at the package that still lots of them, we give it for people we met along the street or who were work on the field or even to the children who are playing.
It touched us when seeing their happy face for receiving the gift. What we give them perhaps not an expensive thing still they looks so happy and keep expressing their gratitude.

Our group today is larger than the latest visit, as not only Pak Kadek Natan and Private Leisure crews, who went there, but also Mrs. Dawn, as well as Komang and Bagus from Ahimsa. Full prepared to this village, all with stuff ready to deliver we set off happily. Finally arrive at 12.30 p.m. at the village head office, directly accompanied by the head of the village. We then visited one by one those local people houses to distributing contribution such as primary needs, clothes – lots of them from Mrs. Dawn – and tens of towels. We were visiting seven families. We have really lot of fun. And we do really enjoy it, or not, honestly it is somewhat exciting if remembering one special road we need to go through in order to reach one of the local’s houses there. This off road track succeed make most of us throwing jokes whilst the beating heart consciously warned to watch of our step. Even though most of the road must be reached by foot, this one special road – yes reader – it is special, as miss step would perfectly make your body rolling around to the bottom with real pain aching all around yours. Yes, one or two wrong foot step then say hi to the ravine below. But hey, we succeeded to passed it.

There we meet various families, from old couples and young couples up to lonely old playboy. There are two quiet young couple that also part of cow project, Wayan Jati and Wayan Kawan. Wayan Jati and his wife, Ni Nengah Sri has one 3 years old baby as he supported his family only by doing course laborer. Another one is Wayan Kawan and his wife Ni Made Sariani who had already blessed with two children, this family is also one of the cow receiver for Nawa Kerti cow project.

We also visiting some old couples like Wayan Joglogan and his wife Ni Wayan Sungkeg, Ketut Dengkil and Ni Nyoman Peges, Wayan Cekeg and spouse Ni Ketut Ririg. Two last couples are Wayan Wangi family who have five children although when we visited his house, there is no one at home since all has already went to the temple as the local religious ceremony took place at that day.

What mostly give us surprise and barely made us for seconds speechless perhaps the nonchalant playboy, Ketut Kuat. Two, four or even five wives are not normal nowadays, but this old man can manage to have 8 wives in total. Really a fabulous numbers and ridiculously matching name since Kuat in English means Strong, yes he did strong to finally manage having that many wives in one life time. Ketut Kuat now only live with his two wives with children spread everywhere as he confessed has around 24 children. He is jobless right now and only manages to support his and his two wives life through becoming a junk scavenger.

Through achieving the cow from our charity project hopefully could help Pak Kuat and his wives get a better living. Finally, after distributing all aids to the people rightful of it, our team then went back to the village head’s office as to bit farewell with him. After numerous visits, some house projects and as it ended with cow project, we exchange few words with the head village. It is indeed we went through a lot of things to finalize all project at Nawa Kerti and parting not such an easy way to do. Still, it does not mean that everything was over with this village, no matter in what form, as long as we are able to help this village, this charity team are willing to help. Nawakerti is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.

Continuing the charity project in Nawakerti village of Karangasem Regency, today we, Private Leisure International is not alone anymore as we assisted by Natan Hospitality Indonesia. We departed to Nawakerti village on October 8th from Denpasar, and just like our previous trip to this village, it always been a long trip to finally arrive. Quite difficult actually to deny the long distance to reach this village since it is part of the most eastern regency of Bali. Moreover, with the hectic traffic and jammed everywhere on road since early in the morning had made we arrived a little late from our initial time appointment with the head of the village, Pak Nengah.

Soon we meet with Pak Nengah, explanation about this new project and its primary installment, which half of it has already begun, were discuss. The project is all about cattle breeding for twentieth families whom the village considered as those who have low economic capability. The project itself is a phased project and hoped could reach all people in Nawakerti village just with three layer project phases. The first phase of this project, as had been mentioned above are families with the lowest economic capability in this village, each of them handed with one cow for it to breed and for each one of calf to be given to the next families who are in the second phase of this project. After the project reached all families in that village, precisely sixty families, those who are in the last period of these phases project should give their calf to the village institution under the concern of village board.

The first phase, the twentieth families deserved the cow, only eight of them that had received it so far and we’d see them right away after the light and warm discussion with Pak Nengah, which was followed by the arrival of village leader “penglingsir” Pak Sujana, we departed to see the first eight families receiving the cows. We cannot reach each house with car due to its inland location, as there are very rare accesses for car to enter, make us should have quite a long tracking. We are pleased to do it since it something hard to find in Denpasar, of you walking in a total peace and so close to nature. Regardless of the lack of comfortable road access, it has come to a delightful feeling of breathing over non-polluted air as well as helps us to understand better their hardship.

Upon seeing them we are not only wanted to see the cow itself, figuratively the celebrity of that day, we’d like also to see the condition of family deserved the cow. Even poverty, despite of its one basic meaning has different colors in reality, different but sounds familiar but not too familiar for those who are never live with it. The cow is the way we want to help them yet never intended to indulge them with charity, as we want to assist their life where they themselves also take part in it, the reason why we give it to family who have the burden of family and healthy enough to raise the cow. There we saw family with a paralyzed girl to raise, a family whose head is only a farmworker like Pak Wayan Soma, or only a bamboo basket maker like Pak Nengah Putra , all with professions that are not certain a day could result some money for their family.

Most of them also breeding two or three cows but those are not belong to them, they only breed it until it worth enough for sell and share the profit, quite long patience to breed and get the result actually. The focus of this cow project is intended for them to raise the cow and make the living through it, in which one village could assist each other to make a better living.

This is the work in progress of the house we built for Pak Gejer and his family we once wrote in Three Generations in Poverty. With the number of people in the family, they need a larger house than the other house we built for Pak Berag. So it obviously takes longer to complete and definitely more hands. Situation is worsened as the house is located a bit away from tarmac road so all heavy materials have to be hand carried.

It is very interesting to see villagers work hard – unpaid – to help their fellow to get a better house. Delay was also caused by a ceremony taking place in the village so all villagers are occupied to the event. Hope it will be completed next time we come.

Even without the door and window it is already much better than before. But no matter how excited he is with his new house, as a Balinese he has to wait for a ceremony which can only held in the “right” day before he can move in.
